Custer’s MREA announces solar initiative for Wisconsin schools

By Patrick Lynn

Schools in Wisconsin are starting to go solar, thanks in part to a new initiative from the Custer-based Midwest Renewable Energy Association.

The initiative, Solar on Schools, was formed in partnership with the Couillard Solar Foundation, based in Deerfield, in late 2019. The program aims to “help 100 Wisconsin schools realize the financial, educational, and community benefits of going solar,” according to a news release from MREA.

The program includes a grant valued up to $20,000, with an online resource center and technical assistance services. The MREA will provide all services free of charge to eligible schools. Interested schools can find out more about the program and apply for the various services at www.midwestrenew.org/solar-on-schools. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Since the program’s soft launch, six schools have already participated from school districts in Merton, Madison, and Eau Claire, with others in earlier stages of development. Merton has a new 389-kW PV system that went online last November, and Superintendent Ronald Russ anticipates it will save the district more than $70,000 annually in energy costs.

Amanda Schienebeck serves as MREA’s solar program coordinator for Solar on Schools, said the initiative was a “unique way” for schools to cut their operating expenses without cutting into existing education programs or other services.

“Perhaps equally as important, schools are able to leverage the educational component of solar PV to engage and excite the next generation in renewable energy and clean energy careers,” Schienebeck said.

Founded in 1990, MREA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization that promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration.
