County, SPPD to participate in speed enforcement task force

Metro Wire Staff

Two local law enforcement agencies are participating in a speed enforcement campaign between June and August.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office and the Stevens Point Police Department will be participating
in a Multijurisdictional Traffic Safety Task Force. The campaign means additional manpower on the streets and is being funded with a grant.

In an effort to increase highway safety, officers from both agencies will be increasing traffic contacts during the summer months. Primary enforcement will focus on speeding, aggressive driving, unrestrained occupants, and OWI offenses.

The objective of the task force is to decrease the number of targeted violations, related traffic
crashes, and to “increase voluntary compliance with traffic laws thereby decreasing fatalities and
serious injuries on Portage County roadways,” a news release from the sheriff’s office reads.
