Conservationist among those recognized at UW-Stevens Point

Faculty members at UW-Stevens Point have been honored for their excellent work.

Christine Thomas, professor emeritus and retired dean of the College of Natural Resources, was recently named Wisconsin Outdoor News Conservationist of the Year for her key roles in the Wisconsin and national conservation scene.

A UW-Stevens Point alumna, she developed the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program and served on the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board and in several national conservation positions. Among her national and state honors, she was named to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2017.

Clinical Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Sondra Reynolds was presented the 2020 President’s Award at the annual Wisconsin Speech-Language-Hearing Association (WSHA) Convention. She has been a member of the WSHA executive board for eight years, including serving a term as president. An alumna of UW-Stevens Point, she coordinates the CSD undergraduate program and is the director of clinical services-speech and language pathology.

The Dean of Students Office was recognized by the Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free Coalition for outstanding efforts to curb e-cigarette use. These included the creation of signage on the tobacco-free campus to curb vaping and e-cigarettes, educational sanctions for students found vaping on campus, e-cigarette education in the residence halls, surveys about e-cigarette use and training for professionals who discuss e-cigarette and tobacco use with students.

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter at UW-Stevens Point was awarded with 2020 Gold Chapter Honors by the National NSSLHA office. The chapter supported the national office by increasing awareness and advocacy for communication sciences and disorders and contributing to scholarships.

The online health and wellness coaching certificate program through UW-Stevens Point and National Wellness Institute were recently made an Approved Health and Wellness Coach Training and Education Program by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).
