PORTAGE COUNTY — The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin announced the recipients of its 2024 Major Projects Grants on Thursday, awarding $25,000 each to the Jensen Community Center in Amherst and the Waushara County Animal Shelter.

The grants aim to support initiatives that strengthen community connections and address local needs in Portage and Waushara counties.

The Jensen Community Center will use its grant to complete the final phase of its 3Stage Expansion Project, which includes an outdoor terrace, improved fire protection, and an expanded theater stage. The center has seen increasing demand as local organizations use the space for events, meetings, and educational activities.

“The Jensen Community Center is truly the hub of the community, bringing together patrons of all ages and providing experiences that overlap the generational divide,” said Sandra Lynne Schmutzler, board president of the center. “The grant lends credibility to our project and its donors.”

The Waushara County Animal Shelter plans to expand its facilities, providing additional space for stray dogs and accommodating overflow from surrounding counties. The project is expected to reduce transportation costs and improve access to care through a local veterinary partner.

Andrea, a Waushara County resident who adopted her dog Uno from the shelter, praised its dedication. “They gave us a very honest assessment of Uno and allowed us to foster him before committing to adoption. Within one day, we knew he was home,” she said.

Community Foundation Board Member Rachel Pekowsky, who chairs the grants committee, expressed enthusiasm for the partnerships. “These grants allow organizations to meet their goals and serve their communities,” she said.

The Major Projects Grants are part of the foundation’s broader effort to support impactful programs in alignment with its mission. For more information on the grant process, contact Sarah Ross, director of community grants, at [email protected] or 715-342-4454.
