Combined Choirs to present first concert of the semester

The combined voices of several choirs will perform the first concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The concert will be held in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point, under the direction of Lecturer Duane Karna, interim director of choral activities in the Department of Music.
The concert begins with “If Music Be the Food of Love” by David Dickau and “Musicks Empire” by Lloyd Pfautsch. The men of the Choral Union and Concert Choir will then perform an arrangement of “Down in the Valley” by George Mead, conducted by student Michael Treder and accompanied on piano by student Jaymes Gayhart.
The Women’s Choir will perform “Sing a Song of Sixpence—6Pence” arranged by Jackson Berkey and accompanied on two grand pianos by students Yifan Ning and Jueying Li. The Concert Choir, Chamber Orchestra and Music Professor Susan Bender, soprano, will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Regina Coeli.”
Morten Lauridsen’s “Three Nocturnes” will be sung in French, Spanish and English, accompanied on piano by Mark Hanson, assistant professor of musical theatre. The last works will be three Craig Hella Johnson arrangements, “I Love You/What a Wonderful World,” “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” and “Let the River Run” by the Combined Choirs, accompanied by Hanson.
Karna is new to UW-Stevens Point this year, having previously taught and directed choral activities at Ball State University, where he coordinated the graduate program in choral music studies. An accomplished singer, choral conductor and voice researcher, he has degrees from the University of Puget Sound, Southern Methodist University and the University of Arizona-Tucson.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
