Column: Miresse reports progress on bipartisan measures at Capitol

Rep. Vinnie here, your state representative in Madison. I wanted to share a brief update on the work I’ve been doing on your behalf in the state Capitol. I’m proud to report that nine bills I worked on this session have made it to the governor’s desk and are now Wisconsin law. While coverage of politics often emphasizes political gridlock, I want to make sure to highlight the good work being done despite partisan differences. These bills were all bipartisan efforts—examples of how governing should be done.

Act 17 adjusts the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to address Wisconsin’s nursing shortage. By bringing our standards in line with neighboring states, this bipartisan law allows APRNs to provide care like a doctor would, helping rural health care providers deliver quality, timely care.

Act 21 eliminates the outdated income cap that limited caregiver support for families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or similar illnesses. By removing the $48,000 household income limit, we’ve ensured all families facing these challenges can access the help they need.

Act 22 requires hospitals to obtain a patient’s permission before performing a pelvic exam under general anesthesia. It’s a simple matter of consent and dignity. This protection should have been law long ago.

Act 28 increases protections for animals serving with fire departments and law enforcement. These animals keep our communities safe, and this law ensures they receive the respect they deserve. If a perpetrator harms or attempts to harm a service animal, they will be held accountable.

Each of these laws passed with bipartisan support—proof that when legislators set aside partisan marching orders, we can deliver real solutions for the people we serve. Wisconsin’s challenges won’t be solved through gridlock. They’ll be solved when lawmakers, Republican and Democrat alike, come to the table ready to listen, compromise, and put community needs first. My hope is that these successes encourage colleagues across the aisle to keep the lines of communication open as we tackle other pressing issues.
