The Aldo Leopold Audubon Society announced on Thursday that Stevens Point is once again a Bird City Wisconsin awardee.
Kent Hall, Conversation Chairman of the Society, presented Mayor Mike Wiza with the award on March 4. It’s the 12th consecutive recognition for the city.
Communities must apply to become a Bird City. To be eligible, a community must endorse and practice habitat creation, protection, and monitoring; community forest management; limiting or removing threats to birds; public education; energy and sustainability; and recognize World Migratory Bird Day.
Bird Cities are awarded with a recognition on the City Bird Wisconsin website, street signs, a recognition plaque, and an electronic copy of the Bird City logo for use on municipal documents.
Wiza said Hall was “instrumental” in the city’s award.
“There are countless hours invested in compiling information and highlighting everything we do from a conservation standpoint from our solar initiatives, carbon footprint reductions, composting program, habitat maintenance and restoration, and our Tree City USA status,” Wiza said. “Everything gets tied together.”
