City seeks applicants for interim clerk

By Patrick Lynn

The City of Stevens Point is now taking applicants from persons interested in serving as city clerk through April 2021.

Clerk Paul Piotrowski announced last week he was stepping down after 16 months in the position. He served as the interim clerk for eight months after running unopposed in a special election last April.

Piotrowski took over for longtime City Clerk John Moe, who moved out of Stevens Point with about two years left in his term, which expires next spring.

Any city resident over the age of 18, with no felony convictions, can apply for the position. The city clerk is the custodian of the official seal and all city records. Duties include the publishing, filing, indexing, and safekeeping of all proceedings of the Stevens Point Common Council and various committees.

The clerk also fills a number of requirements under state statute, and issues all licenses required by ordinance or state statute, also administering oaths and affirmations, coordinating the 2020 Census, distributing public correspondence, and ensuring that municipal records are accessible to the public.

Additional information on the clerk’s duties can be found under Wisconsin State Statute 62.09 (11) and Stevens Point City Ordinance 3.04.

The clerk is required to attend council meetings, and occasional evening work is part of the job. Applicants should have strong organizational skills, and be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

The city clerk is a full-time position and as of Jan. 1, 2020 earns $67,840. In May, the salary increases under the city’s pay plan to $69,540.

Anyone meeting the requirements should submit their resume outlining their credentials, along with a cover letter explaining why they are interested in the position, to the Stevens Point Personnel Office, 1515 Strongs Ave., Stevens Point, Wis. 54481.

Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13.
