City says goodbye to popular community development director

The city of Stevens Point officially bid farewell to Community Development Director Ryan Kernosky during the Sept. 16 Common Council meeting.

Kernosky unexpectedly stepped down from his full-time role last month and has remained part-time to assist the city until his replacement is hired.

“Director Kernosky has taken a job at the university, and he’ll be leaving the city of Stevens Point,” said Mayor Mike Wiza. “I know he’s created a wonderful team, and we’re going to be in good hands. In fact, Thursday we’ll ask the Council to approve his replacement.”

Wiza presented Kernosky with a plaque recognizing his service.

“In recognition of your dedicated public service as community development director for the city of Stevens Point, the people of the city extend their profound appreciation and sincere gratitude to you for serving from Oct. 31, 2019, through Aug. 26, 2024,” Wiza said. “Thank you very much for your service. The floor is yours.”

The typically stoic Kernosky was overcome with emotion as he thanked the Council and city staff for their support over the years.

“This has got to be the shortest Council meeting I think I’ve ever attended,” Kernosky said, joking about his students who were in the audience as part of a public meeting assignment. “It’s been a true pleasure of mine. You folks have been really excellent. The Council’s been really good to work with.”

Kernosky highlighted some of the accomplishments during his tenure, particularly in redevelopment efforts in the downtown area.

“We’ve done some pretty incredible things over the last five years, really set this community up for long-term success,” he said. “I brought some pretty crazy ideas to you folks, and you’ve always taken them with grace and generally agreed.”

He also expressed gratitude to his staff and family, noting the personal sacrifices that came with the job.

“Every Monday for the last five years, I’ve spent time here at the city, giving myself to the residents and to the Council, taking away time from my wife and children,” Kernosky said, his voice breaking. “I can’t wait to be done with this. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.”

Keronsky was given a standing ovation following his remarks.
