Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony presents spring concert

The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra Program (CWYSOP) will perform a concert Sunday, April 7, at 4 p.m. at the Stevens Point Area Senior High School auditorium.
The concert will feature soloist Havilah Vang, the co-winner of the symphony’s biennial Concerto Competition, as well as performances by the Youth Symphony, Philharmonia and Percussion Ensemble.
Under the direction of conductor Stephan Wucherer, the Philharmonia will perform “American Landscape” by Soon Hee Newbold, “On the Steppes of Central Asia” by Alexander Borodin, “Shannon Falls” from “Sea to Sky” by Ralph Ford and “Berceuse and Finale” from “The Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky.
The Youth Symphony, under the direction of Kurt Van Tiem, will perform “Danzon No. 2” by Arturo Márquez, “Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21” by Ĕdouard Lalo and featuring Vang on violin, “One Hand, One Heart” from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein and Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 “From the New World” by Antonín Dvoŕăk.
The Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of UW-Stevens Point Assistant Professor Brian Baldauff, will perform “Release the Kraken” by John Willmarth and “Shh…” by Benjamin Fraley.
Vang is a homeschooled student from Custer, the daughter of Meas and Johanna Vang. She has studied violin and voice at the Aber Suzuki Center and plans to major in music education to become a violin professor. She also plays guitar, mandolin, and piano and is assistant concertmaster of the Youth Symphony.
Tickets will be available at the door starting at 3 p.m. Admission is $3 per person or $10 for families of four or more. Cash or checks made out to UWSP Continuing Education/CWYSOP will be accepted.
CWYSOP is a nonprofit organization in partnership with UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education, Music Department, Aber Suzuki Center, Heid Music and music educators in central Wisconsin. It serves more than 100 young musicians from the central Wisconsin region.
The groups meet each week for 10 weeks per semester and receive additional mentoring from the UW-Stevens Point Music Department student section coaches. They also participate in Music Department faculty master classes and rehearse symphonic literature.
