A single-vehicle crash in the Town of Buena Vista claimed the life of a Bancroft man on Saturday evening.

According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on County Highway JJ, about 600 feet south of Coddington Road.

The driver, identified as 50-year-old William C. Scarce, was traveling southbound in a 2001 Buick when he lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the road and overturned multiple times in a nearby farm field.

Scarce, who was ejected from the vehicle, sustained fatal injuries. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Preliminary investigations suggest that speed, inattentive driving, and drug use may have been contributing factors to the crash.

Emergency responders from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Portage County Ambulance, Almond EMS, and Almond Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. The Portage County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted in the response.

The incident remains under investigation by the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.
