PORTAGE COUNTY – The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County has wrapped up its 2024 summer programming, marking another season of engaging and educational activities for more than 1,000 area youngsters.
With the summer behind them, the Club is now setting its sights on the upcoming school year, which promises expanded opportunities for academic support, physical activity, and career exploration.
This summer’s programs featured a wide array of activities, including the Swim Club, which attracted 397 participants, and the highly popular Field Day event, which brought nearly 250 kids together, the Club said. The Club also organized 38 field trips, offering children the chance to explore locations such as the Marshfield Zoo and the Wisconsin Dells, ensuring a summer full of memorable experiences.
In addition to recreational fun, the Club placed a strong emphasis on combating summer learning loss. The Summer Literacy Enrichment Program provided personalized reading support, while other clubs, such as the Fishing Club, Voyagers Club, and Tour de Parks, provided a blend of education, creativity, and physical activity.
Career exploration remained a top priority with specialized Career Camps, including an Aviation Career Camp where participants learned about the principles of flight and toured planes at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport. The Club also hosted Mini-Career Camps focused on outdoor skills like archery and wilderness safety.
As the new school year begins, the Boys & Girls Club will operate at eight sites across the county, serving students from first through 12th grade. Each day after school, youth will have access to a nutritious hot meal or snack, homework support, and a variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities. Additionally, the Club will offer gym and recreational activities to promote physical health and teamwork.
“We’re excited to welcome children and teens back for what promises to be an exceptional school year,” said Danielle Belsky, the newly appointed CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County. “With expanded programming that includes dedicated homework time, STEAM activities, and recreational opportunities, we’re committed to providing a safe, supportive, and affordable environment where every child can thrive. We’re ready to make this school year our best one yet.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County serves over 2,000 youth across 11 locations in Stevens Point, Plover, Junction City, Rosholt, Amherst, and Almond-Bancroft. Membership is open year-round with affordable fees for both summer and school year seasons.
