ALERT: Portage Co. Sheriff warns of scam calls impersonating detective
Metro Wire Staff
PORTAGE COUNTY — The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam calls from individuals impersonating a department detective.
Sheriff Mike Lukas said the scammers are using the name of Det. Sgt. Blake Porter in phone calls that appear to originate from the sheriff’s office number, 715-346-1400. The caller claims the recipient has a warrant for their arrest, unresolved court issues, missed jury duty, or similar legal troubles.
According to Lukas, the scammer often prompts the recipient to repeat a statement acknowledging the alleged issue, which may then be recorded. The caller provides a callback number, 715-596-8821, where a male voice answers as the “Sheriff’s Office” or where a voicemail identifies the number as the “Portage County Sheriff’s Office Warrant’s Division.”
Lukas urged residents to remain cautious, advising anyone who receives such calls to hang up immediately and avoid sharing any personal or financial information.
Anyone with concerns or who believes they have been targeted by the scam is encouraged to contact the Portage County Sheriff’s Office directly at 715-346-1400.
