The application period for the Portage Co. Emergency Services Citizens Academy Class of 2021 is now open.

Co-hosted by the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, police departments in Stevens Point and Plover, and the Stevens Point Fire Department, the 12-week academy offers citizens hands-on experience in the world of emergency services.

Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Karpinski said space is limited to about 20 and advises anyone with interest to apply quickly.

The academy consists of tours of local fire and law enforcement facilities, and participants will become familiar, as they feel comfortable, with firearms, operating emergency vehicles, arrest tactics, and more.

Classes are held on Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. beginning September 9. Graduation will commence on November 11.

There is no charge to enroll but participants will be subject to a criminal background check.

To apply please contact Karpinski at [email protected], or call at 715.344.1833, by Aug. 6.
