A big day for Plover, as Thauer promoted to police captain
By Brandi Makuski
PLOVER – Brent Thauer was officially promoted to Captain of the Plover Police Department on Jan. 2, during a ceremony attended by a packed board room at the Plover Municipal Center, with many more filling the hallway.
After being offered the new role at his home agency, Thauer, a 19-year veteran in the department, withdrew his name from consideration to become the new police chief at UW-Stevens Point.
Police Chief Ryan Fox praised Thauer for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
“Brent has faced every challenge head-on, never shying away from difficult situations,” Fox said. “He consistently demonstrates the integrity, tenacity, and ethical decision-making that are vital to our profession. We’re proud to have him lead this department into the future.”
Fox also highlighted Thauer’s ability to handle adversity and his consistent pursuit of excellence.
“Whether it’s tackling complex investigations or navigating difficult situations, Brent has always shown the leadership needed in those moments. His promotion is a recognition of the remarkable effort he’s put into this department and his unwavering commitment to public safety.”
The promotion comes as the department also celebrates its 50th anniversary. Fox said he was confident in Thauer’s ability to continue building on the department’s strong reputation and lead with new perspectives and ideas.
“As captain, he’ll bring fresh ideas, but he also understands the importance of maintaining the strong foundation we’ve already built,” Fox said.
Before swearing Thauer into the role, Fox administered the Oath of Honor, a Plover tradition in which Thauer reaffirmed his commitment to integrity, accountability, and public trust. But in a new twist, Fox asked every law enforcement officer in the room to stand and take the oath along with Thauer, which Police and Fire Commission Chairman Jeff Whitrock later described as a “very moving” moment.
“I’m humbled by the trust the department has placed in me,” Thauer said. “This is not only a personal achievement but a reflection of the team we have here. I’m proud to work alongside such dedicated professionals. Together, we will continue to serve this community with the highest standards of integrity and respect.”
Thauer expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career. He thanked Chief Fox, Assistant Chief Brian Noel, and the police and fire commission for their mentorship and guidance.
“I’ve had the privilege of learning from the best. Chief Fox, Assistant Chief Noel, and all the mentors I’ve had along the way have helped shape who I am as a leader today,” Thauer said. “I am also deeply thankful for the support from my colleagues and from the village board, who have always had the department’s back.”
He also acknowledged the hard work of his colleagues in the department, including officers and office staff, and the support from the community and local government. “This promotion is not just about me—it’s about all the people I’ve worked with. Our office staff, our patrol officers, and the entire team make this department what it is. I’m grateful for every single one of them.”
“I am proud to be a part of this team and this community,” Thauer continued. “We have a dedicated group of professionals here in Plover who work together to keep this community safe. I look forward to supporting my fellow officers and continuing to grow as a leader.”
Plover Village Administrator Steve Kunst and Police and Whitrock also offered their congratulations, emphasizing Thauer’s leadership and the strong support he has from the community and department.
Kunst praised Thauer’s long-standing commitment to Plover. “Brent has dedicated nearly two decades to this community, and his promotion is well-deserved. His leadership, both as an officer and as a person, has earned the respect of everyone around him,” Kunst said. “This is an exciting moment not just for Brent, but for all of us who are proud to work alongside him.”
Whitrock emphasized the support Thauer has earned from his peers.
“Brent is a prime example of the type of leader we want to see in our department. His character, his dedication to the community, and his ability to work with others are the qualities that have made him stand out. We are lucky to have him as our new Captain,” Whitrock said.
“The department has a lot to be proud of,” Whitrock continued. “The commitment we see from this department, and from Brent, shows just how much we all value the safety and well-being of this community. I have no doubt that under his leadership, Plover will continue to thrive.”
The promotion ceremony concluded with refreshments and cake,
“I’m excited for what’s to come,” Thauer said as the event wrapped up. “We have a great team in place, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
