Upward Bound now taking applications for ’21 for students in grades 8-11

The application period for the Upward Bound Program at the UW-Stevens Point is now open.

The program is open to all students in grades 8-11. UW-Stevens Point has hosted the Upward Bound Program for more than 50 years.

Designed as a high school college-prep program and part of the Federal TRIO Grant Programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound invites participants who are either first-generation (parents do not have a four-year degree) and/or low-income students.

The Upward Bound staff provide year-round services to the students through online tutoring, monthly school visits, weekend workshops, college financial aid application assistance, ACT prep, and college application assistance. All services are provided to our students at no cost.

In the summer between grades 8 and 9, participants come to the UWSP campus for a one-week summer session. In the summers after grades 9-11, participants come to campus for five weeks. Participating students will live in residence halls, eat in the dining halls, take classes to prepare them for the upcoming school year, take weekend trips, and live like a college student.

Upward Bound also takes its students on college visits throughout the year, seeing technical, state, private, and some out-of-state universities. Participants can see up to nine colleges and universities per year.

To apply, students must attend within the Stevens Point school district, currently be in grades 8, 9, 10, or 11, and complete an online preliminary application at www.uwsp.edu/upbound and click “Apply Now.” The application takes approximately two minutes to complete.
