Metro Wire Staff

Two men were flown to area hospitals following a late-night crash in Almond on Wednesday.

The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office says two men, 53-year-old Robert G. Hutkowski from Pine Grove, and Cory J. Methfessel, 42 of Almond, sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash.

Hutkowski later died of his injuries, according to Sheriff Mike Lukas.

Portage Co. Deputies and emergency crews from Bancroft and Almond fire departments, as well as the Portage Co. Ambulance Service, responded to the scene, near the intersection of County Hwy. A and 2nd Ave. in Almond, at 11:58 p.m. on Dec. 30.

The single-vehicle accident caused the vehicle to be “torn into two pieces,” according to the news release, and both men were thrown from the vehicle.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
