Police seek info on Sculpture Park graffiti

Stevens Point police are looking for the one or more people responsible for vandalizing the city’s sculpture park, which is located at 900 North Second St. near Zenoff Park.

Lt. Greg Bean of the SPPD said police were notified this morning that graffiti had been spraypainted on buildings, benches, signposts, and art installations in the 20-acre park, which connects to the Green Circle Trail.

The graffiti was discovered by volunteers setting up for the fifth annual Reeder’s Ruck 8K race, which kicked off the morning of May 4 and partly took place along some of the Sculpture Park trails.

Bean said the vandalism occurred sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning, and consisted of sexually-graphic drawings and at least one racial slur, all visible from the trails.

“I don’t know if there’s actual damage, or if they can even remove the paint from some of those sculptures because of the materials they’re made of,” Bean said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portage Co. Communications Center at (715) 346-1500.
