Plover Legion baseball suffers loss with a Rapids late-inning score

The Plover Legion baseball team suffered a tough loss on Monday night as Wisconsin Rapids rallied in the seventh inning to squeak by with the win 6-5.

Plover jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Austin Beyer doubled; in the fifth, Jack Kelly singled to score Kaden Roberts, adding on to their lead.

At the top of the sixth inning, the Ramblers homered to tie the game. Wisconsin Rapids then answered with a pair of singles by Brett Ehr and Derek Baumgartner, scoring two more and allowing Plover to reclaim the lead 4-2.

Wisconsin Rapids’ Zwicke homered in the seventh giving the Ramblers two more runs, bringing the score to 5-4. A Black Sox error added another baserunner in scoring position for their opponent who crossed the plate with a double by Wenzel to tie the game. The Ramblers’ go-ahead run was a sacrifice fly that scored a runner making a final score of 6-5 in favor of Wisconsin Rapids.

Plover Black Sox collected 10 hits, out-hitting Rapids’ six. Kaden Roberts and Schulfer each collected multiple hits for Plover Black Sox. The Ramblers top hitters Huber and Zwicke both homered in the game.

Caleb Krommenakker was credited with the victory on the mound for Wisconsin Rapids.

Logan Schulfer was the starting pitcher for the Black Sox, going five innings with two runs on three hits, five walks, and eight strikeouts. Dylan Davis pitched in relief and suffered the loss for Plover going two innings, with two earned runs on three hits and four strikeouts.

Plover’s overall record falls to 13-6 on the season.

The Black Sox’ next game is in Antigo on Tuesday, with a scheduled 7 p.m. start.
