Library introduces new programs, virtual discussion, for adults

By Patrick Lynn

The Portage County Public Library is offering some COVID-adapted adult programming for the winter season.

All of the programs are available without physically entering one of the county’s four library locations.

A library system’s Movie Club will offer a different theme each month and a place for virtual discussion. The December theme is “Holiday Movies.”

Laura Fuller, branch librarian for Almond, Plover, Rosholt locations, said a series of holiday titles, including Elf (2003), Meet Me in St. Louis (1945), The Snowman (1982), and Truman Capote’s One Christmas (1994), are available for rent in person, via curbside pickup, or on the library’s streaming service Hoopla.

“It’s a brand new program, set up just like our book club,” Fuller said. “At the end of each month, we’ll have a Zoom chat to discuss the movies.”

Participants are also welcome to choose their own film for the discussion, Fuller said.

Another new program, Take It, Make It, Flaunt It, is a quasi-crafting club, with new kits available twice a month and open to residents of all interests. Recently, the program offered “Hug in a Mug,” which provided supplies to bake a brownie in a mug via the microwave.

Fuller said the program will include holiday projects in December and include make-your-own ornaments and greeting cards. Other future projects are related to self-care, such as creating a homemade foot scrub and journaling. Participants are invited to join a twice-monthly Zoom meeting to “flaunt” and discuss their projects.

The library will also continue its adult book club, which offers various titles and meets virtually throughout the week.

Fuller said the programs are designed to close the distance between people during a time of social distancing.

“And hopefully it’ll kick off a new hobby for people,” she said. “During this time people are isolated and looking for something fun.”

The clubs and materials are available free of charge for library members. For new members, library cards can be obtained at any library branch with a photo ID.
